I miss this girl so much. We were roommates in college for three years (we still call each other “roomie”). After graduation, I moved back home but ended up moving back to Maryland for work — then she moved to California for pharmacy school!

I’m already saving up for our next shopping expedition :)

Today was the most stressful, trying day. But when it really comes down to it, no matter what goes wrong, I’ll be fine as long as I have

a loving family
awesome friends
my health
a roof over my head

A bonus? Supportive co-workers, both senior and junior staff. I can’t tell you how blessed I am to work where I do.

Although things get crazy and I miss home something fierce, I am awesome and I have a great life — and no one is going to convince me otherwise.

ONE MORE THING: Life is just too short to let things weigh you down. Forgive others, forgive yourself, let go, move on and live your life.

An eclectic roster of artists and entertainment industry figures were named to the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the White House announced on Monday evening. Among the 25 people who were named by President Obama as members to the committee were the talent agent Bryan Lourd, the managing director and co-chairman of Creative Artists Agency; the actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Edward Norton; the cellist Yo-Yo Ma; and Teresa Heinz Kerry, the philanthropist and wife of Senator John Kerry. Also named were the actors Kerry Washington, Forest Whitaker and Alfre Woodard; the director George C. Wolfe; Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue magazine; Damian Woetzel, the former New York City Ballet dancer; and the architect Thom Mayne. In September, the committee, which works with federal cultural agencies and in the private and public sectors to further the White House’s cultural objectives, named George Stevens Jr. and Margo Lion its co-chairs and Mary Schmidt Campbell its vice chairwoman.

Can I just say that I love how Anna Wintour was named to the committee? Art and culture are so much more than music, dance, theatre, literature and visual art — they’re also fashion, architecture, design and other things we see and use every day. So many times we go to arts and culture for entertainment and treat the arts so high-brow, like the phrase should be capitalized (“The Arts”) , but sometimes I think we forget how much of it is actually in our homes, offices and on our backs.

A work/life balance has always been important to me. Although it’s not so much an issue right now, there’s a good chance it’ll become one in the future. It’s a struggle I’m anticipating and already thinking a great deal about.

The fact that a couple as busy and in the public eye as the Obamas can maintain such a great, loving marriage is incredibly inspiring. Their mutual respect, their mutual support — they’re a team, and it shows.

It’s Halloween at our office today and this is what I ended up wearing. I haven’t dressed up for Halloween in over a decade, and I had been racking my brain all week trying to think of a costume. No such luck!

While rummaging through my closet this morning I found this polka dot dress I bought three years ago. Paired with the sweater, scarf, peep-toe shoes and a high curly ponytail, I think I can pass this off as a kind of 50’s thing. In contrast with my co-workers’ costumes (Spongebob Squarepants and Jane from Tarzan to name just a couple), it’s the most tame of Halloween costumes (and in all honesty you can’t really tell it’s a costume), but hey, I can’t complain. I don’t dress like this every day and I didn’t have to buy anything extra for it!

oh my GOD this album. shit. i love every word. reminds me of that time in middle school/high school when i first realized that being a teenager was “difficult” and that music “got me.” it was all about heartbreak and being misunderstood (you wanna know who i really am? / yeah, so do i) and i wanted to be able to relate to every word. in reality, the only experience with “love” i had at 15 were those times where crushes on boys felt monumental. when they fizzled (inevitably) i could sing along to this and it made all of those confusing feelings perversely enjoyable. this kind of music absolutely relishes in that strange you-knew-it-wouldn’t-work sort of relationship. “this is not an exit” still brings on the chills. who knows if this music is considered technically good? i’ll never care.
